CHAPTER TWELVE

Holly made sure the way was clear before heading stealthily down the corridor to Kevin’s office. Jake was still at the hospital and Kevin was in between patients. He looked up when she entered and then frowned when she closed the door.

“Not now, Holly. I’m busy. Whatever it is, it will have to wait.”

Ignoring him, she stepped closer until she reached his wide desk. Leaning over, she smiled at him, taking care to give him a good view of her generous cleavage. Appearing unaffected, Kevin stared back at her, his expression blank.

She swallowed her irritation and pouted. “I’m lonely, Kevin and it’s all your fault.”

His expression remained unchanged. “How is it my fault?”

“You know Shane and I were seeing each other and now…he’s gone. You and I always got along well together. We’ve helped each other in the past.” She looked at him from beneath her thick lashes, her voice full of innuendo. “We could always do that again.”

Kevin sighed and shook his head. “I’m sorry, Holly. I’m not interested.”

She bit down on her irritation and tried harder. Shooting him a calculating smile, she twirled a stray piece of hair around the end of her finger. “That’s not what you said last time.”

“I was trying to be nice. Now it doesn’t matter.”

His words stung. She pulled back and glared at him. “Don’t give me that bullshit. You were the one who came on to me and you enjoyed every minute of it.”

He shrugged and his casual disregard infuriated her.

“Let’s not pretend we both didn’t benefit from it, Holly. You were trying to make Shane jealous and I was looking for a fuck. For a while, we enjoyed what each of us had to offer. But guess what? Shane’s dead and I couldn’t care less about the fact that you’re feeling lonely. We’re done. Got it?”

Her anger hit the boiling point. Without thinking, she reached out and slapped his handsome face. He stared at her in shock. In seconds, an angry red handprint was visible on his cheek.

“You little bitch!” he swore, pushing away from his desk.

She stepped back in alarm. He towered over her and outweighed her by more than a hundred pounds. She was no contest for him and he knew it. Thankfully, she’d brought along just the thing to set him in his place. Diving into the deep pocket of her dress, she pulled out her shiny Beretta and pointed it right at his head.

“Touch me and I’ll tell the police everything,” she said in a rush, trying hard to conceal her panic. It wouldn’t do to let him know she feared him. It was never a good idea to let the enemy see your weakness.

Her fingers itched to pull the trigger, but she resisted the urge. Killing someone took planning. A failure to think things through properly resulted in errors and she prided herself on never making mistakes. Besides, from the look of shock and anger that warred with fear on Kevin’s face, she didn’t need to do more than threaten.
